Customs clearance of items
When you receive an item (letter or parcel) that needs customs clearance, you can do it yourself in the Finnish Customs import customs clearance e-service for private individuals. The service only applies to items sent to private individuals. Domestic items from online stores with a tax border number are not covered by this customs clearance.

How it works
When you receive an arrival notification from Åland Post telling you that your item has arrived (on paper in your mailbox or by text message), it includes instructions on how to do the customs clearance. When the customs clearance is complete, Finnish Customs automatically notifies Åland Post that the item is ready, and we then hand over or deliver the item to you.
If you cannot use the Finnish Customs e-service yourself, another private individual can help you with the customs clearance.
Good to keep in mind:
- When you shop online, contact the company you want to buy from to find out how they handle VAT on items to Åland.
- Remember that you are responsible for the order and for contacting the company.
- On My Page, you can order text message notifications and change the pickup point for your parcels.
- You can do the customs clearance free of charge in the Finnish Customs e-service.
- You can track your item on the Åland Post website.
- You can only pick up or receive your item after customs clearance is complete.
Customs clearance of gifts
To receive a gift in Åland, you may need to clear it through customs. You will then also need to know what the parcel contains. Whether you need to clear it through customs depends on things like where the gift comes from and where it is going.

If you do not want to do the customs clearance yourself in the Finnish Customs e-service, you can have Åland Post do it for you. We offer import customs clearance according to the current price list. Please note that the VAT collected by Finnish Customs and any customs duty are charged in addition.
