Post a Hello! – Part 3: Letters for Valentine’s Day
During the project “Post a Hello!” we have been following class 4C at Strandnäs School. In the third and final part, the students wrote and sent letters ahead of Valentine’s Day. The students thought about their messages and wrote greetings on old-fashioned letter paper, placed them in envelopes together with a Valentine’s Day card they had created in art class, and then posted them in the nearest mailbox. The letters were sent to relatives and friends in Åland, Finland and Sweden – and some even all the way to Poland and Scotland. Here is how the students describe their experiences: I sent mine to my best friend who had just had surgery. / Jana The most fun part is posting the letters and knowing they will really arrive. / Nora I sent mine to my grandma and grandpa because they don’t receive many letters. / Lilo I learned that stamps have different values. / Jonah Through the project, the students practiced writing personal messages, addressing envelopes, and discovering how the postal system works in practice. A big thank you to class 4C for generously sharing their work with Post a Hello! We hope the joy of writing continues and that the students remember how a few small words can make a big difference in a handwritten letter.

What happens to mail we are unable to deliver?
Sometimes we are unable to deliver a letter or package. It may be missing an address, the address may be incorrect or made up, or the name may be unreadable. These are called undeliverable items. We always do our best to find the correct recipient. We also try to locate the sender if the item is returned. Here’s what we do: We store the item at Åland Post Customer Service. By law, we are not allowed to open or discard the item. Twice a year, the undeliverable items are sent to the Government of Åland. Their legal team then tries to trace the sender. Our goal is for every item to either reach the recipient or be returned to the sender. How to reduce the risk of undelivered mail: Always write the recipient’s name and address clearly on your letters and packages. Also include the sender’s name. This increases the chance that your mail will reach its destination or be returned to you if something goes wrong. Have you sent a letter or package that hasn’t arrived? It may be worth contacting our Customer Service. In some cases, we can help by searching through the undeliverable items.
