What happens to mail we are unable to deliver?
Sometimes we are unable to deliver a letter or package. It may be missing an address, the address may be incorrect or made up, or the name may be unreadable. These are called undeliverable items.
We always do our best to find the correct recipient. We also try to locate the sender if the item is returned.
Here’s what we do:
- We store the item at Åland Post Customer Service.
- By law, we are not allowed to open or discard the item.
- Twice a year, the undeliverable items are sent to the Government of Åland. Their legal team then tries to trace the sender.
Our goal is for every item to either reach the recipient or be returned to the sender.
How to reduce the risk of undelivered mail:
- Always write the recipient’s name and address clearly on your letters and packages.
- Also include the sender’s name.
This increases the chance that your mail will reach its destination or be returned to you if something goes wrong.
Have you sent a letter or package that hasn’t arrived? It may be worth contacting our Customer Service.
In some cases, we can help by searching through the undeliverable items.
