Fossil-Free Deliveries as Åland Post Introduces Biogas-Powered Trucks

Åland Post has added two new biogas-powered trucks from Scania to its fleet—the first of their kind on Åland. This investment responds to increasing customer demands for reduced emissions and supports the company’s goal of becoming fossil-free by 2035.

“This is a milestone for our operations. We’ve been closely monitoring the development of fossil-free heavy vehicles, and this is a significant step in the right direction,” says Kristian Kojola, Head of Logistics at Åland Post.

Interest in environmentally friendly delivery solutions is growing among Åland Post’s business customers.

“By introducing biogas vehicles, we’re strengthening our offering of sustainable transport solutions,” Kojola adds.

According to Kennet Uotila, Fleet Manager and Transport Coordinator at Åland Post, there is a long-term investment plan in place to modernize the company’s heavy-duty fleet.

“The specific fuel type we’ll use in the future has yet to be decided, but our target is a fossil-free fleet by 2035. However, factors such as cost trends, route planning, and infrastructure availability will influence our choice of technology,” says Uotila.

Efficient, Food-Grade Vehicles

The new vehicles are FRC-certified and approved for transporting food. They are refueled in Turku, as there is currently no biogas filling station on Åland. With a range of up to 700 kilometers per tank, they are well-equipped to handle longer routes.

“Although gas-powered trucks have a higher upfront cost, we expect them to pay for themselves in about three and a half years thanks to lower fuel expenses compared to equivalent diesel vehicles,” Kojola explains.

With this initiative, Åland Post demonstrates that it's possible to combine business efficiency with tangible environmental action—an important step towards a more sustainable future.
